Being able to communicate is a very important factor for behavioral outcomes and the individual’s level of independence.

If you have a child with special needs or work with individuals with special needs, it is very possible that you have encountered difficulties with communication. Being able to communicate is a very important factor for behavioral outcomes and the individual’s level of independence.

Some of the strategies that I discussed in this YouTube Video are to consistently utilize the sign that you are wanting to teach, paired with voicing the word. You can also incorporate an existing or new picture communication system to help associate the sign and word with a visual representation. When choosing to integrate all three methods of voicing, signing, and a visual representation, be sure to start off by choosing just a few signs that you will utilize on a regular basis. Remember that consistency will be very important when teaching a new skill.
